CMP Media's Software Development Conference
By Ken North
Software Development 2004 (SD2004) was another example of a renewed interest
in tech conferences. Attendance at SD2004 at the Santa Clara Convention Center
was up 60% from the 2003 conference.
Because developer conferences produced by software companies are not
vendor-neutral events, the Software Development conference fills a need. This
year, and in preceding years, Software Development was a broad spectrum
event. It appeals to a developer audience wanting technical education with
content not tied to any specific company or product.
Note: We recorded audio and
video programs during SD2004. Check the list below.
There were several dozen companies exhibiting at SD2004 and the show floor
seemed rather active.

The SD2004 program included tracks about emerging technologies, modeling,
mobile computing, .NET, security, C++, Java, XML and Web services. There were
sessions about programming languages (C++, D, Java), requirements analysis,
model-driven architecture and Web services management.
The keynote speakers
included Steve McConnell, Allan Vermeulen, Herb Sutter, Ivar Jacobson, Grady
Booch and Robert X. Cringley. The conference’s special events included a “Programmers at Work” panel
discussion with Dan Bricklin, Charles Simonyi and others whose careers have
influenced software development. Alexandra Weber Morales, editor of Software
Development magazine, also moderated a panel discussion about offshore outsourcing.

Another special event was a panel discussion about software trends and the
marriage of SQL/XML, web services, and grid computing.

The distinguished panel included Rick Cattell (author and Distinguished
Engineer, Sun Microsystems), Peter Coffee (author and Technology
Editor, eWEEK), Daniela Florescu (co-editor of W3C specs and Senior Software Engineer,
BEA), Jim Gray (author and Distinguished Engineer,
Microsoft Research), Jim Kleewein (Distinguished Engineer, IBM Silicon
Valley Lab), Jim Melton (author and Editor of the ISO/IEC SQL standard,
Oracle Corporation). |
During the conference, we recorded interviews with experts discussing SQL/XML,
data access, XQuery, grid computing, RFID, and integration technologies. In
addition, we recorded the panel discussion about the marriage of SQL/XML, web
services, and grid computing.
SD2004 was the third recent conference with attendance that exceeded the
organizer’s expectations. The surrounding communities in Silicon Valley have
experienced a recent 15% decline in tech employment so achieving a sizable
increase in conference attendance was no small feat.
