Expert Panel Podcast: SQL/XML, XQuery and Databases

The W3C XML specification was the genesis of DBMS products for storing XML content and for the development of XML query languages such as XQL, Quilt and XQuery. The W3C chartered the XML Query Working Group to develop developing specifications related to querying XML documents. One of the specs produced by the working group is the XQuery Language specification.

XML experts, including members of the XML Query Working Group, participated in a panel discussion moderated by Jonathan Robie. The other participants included Ron Bourret, Dana Florescu, Michael Kay and Michael Rys.

Jonathan Robie (DataDirect Technologies) was one of the co-developers of the Quilt query language, which the XML Query working group adopted as the basis for the new W3C XQuery language. Dana Florescu (Oracle) was also a co-developer of Quilt. Michael Rys (Microsoft), like Dana and Jonathan, has been a long-time member of the XML Query Working Group. Michael and Jonathan are co-authors of XQuery from the Experts (Addison-Wesley).

Michael Kay (Saxonica) is the editor of the W3C XSLT 2.0 specification, the author of XSLT Programmer's Reference (Wrox) and the developer of Saxon, an XSLT and XQuery processor. Like the others on the panel, Ron Bourret is a well-known figure in XML circles. He is the author of XML-DBMS, a middleware product for transferring data between XML documents and databases.

Podcast (MP3 Audio): Discussion of XML Query, XML and SQL Databases

The panel discussion at the annual XML conference by IDEAlliance followed a town hall meeting format. Jonathan Robie introduced the panel members and each made opening remarks. Following that, there was a dialogue that included questions from audience members. The recordings from that discussion are presented here in two parts. The focus of part 1 is XQuery (play). Part 2 is a discussion of native XML and XML-enabled SQL databases (play).

There are problems with audio tapes recorded during that session, particularly when there are audience questions. Despite problems of audio quality, we believe these programs are informative.
